Ownership

November 2, 2023

We own nothing. Yup, read that again. Nothing we have is ours. All the special relationships and attachment to things are illusions we sometimes embrace too strongly.

No, I have not lost it. Think for a minute, your family, nobody owns you or you them. Parents, spouse, kids, they are their own individual person, and they do their lives and loves and they see fit. So do you. I cannot chose for anyone, they have to do that for themselves. You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink, I own no one and no one owns me.

How about house, vehicle, job, business, properties, etc? My name is on it, I paid in full and I have a piece of paper that says it is mine. Hmmm, Have you moved from one residence to another? You owned/rented and when you left it, someone else moved into it, you didn’t take it with you, it is impossible to do so. In Portuguese we have a saying, “caskets don’t carry drawers;” meaning, we can’t take anything with us! The possessions we get to be stewards over here on earth, are for us to enjoy, share and exchange.

I have known persons that are soooo attached to their stuff that they can’t move away from it, share it with people or grow out of it. It is a sad life, stuff becomes more important than souls. It makes for a miserable lonely journey. It is all about “what is mine.” When we become owners of things, we let go of precious relationships that could be wonderful if we just explored it, gave it a chance.

The only thing we truly own is our agency. The power to choose.  If you think about it, once we realize we own nothing, it distresses life quite a bit. There is no feeling of loss if it gets taken away, no feeling of failure if it doesn’t work out, no feeling of despair when things fall apart.

So, next time a child does a mistake and you try to own it, please don’t. Next time you have the opportunity to share your worldly possessions and make someone’s life better for it, please consider the good you are bringing into their lives and share away! Next time an opportunity presents itself to you for growth, expansion and joy, take it! It might change your life in ways you never considered possible.

Remember, the owner of all things is God, He entrusted you with whatever you are a steward over. Do your part and continue on the journey to wholeness, with all the lessons you are able to gather along the way. Keep in mind, caskets don’t carry drawers and all you take is the love you shared, the knowledge you gained and the faith you muster.

So glad to be distressed about ownership. You?

Letting Go of What I Can’t Control

Letting Go of What I Can’t Control

Sometimes we get to be in storms that are not of our doing. Because of that, I modified the saying a little, "not my circus, not my monkeys..." I may be in the audience at the circus, no monkeys on my lap. The picture on this post was taken in Playa del Carmen when...
